Quick attention
to stroke signs has
John Teixeira back
to work at H&J
Chevrolet in Kerman.
John Teixeira, 80, has always been a man on the move.
After taking his first job at a local Chevy dealership
just two days before high school graduation, John has
made the auto industry his work for six decades. That
includes owning and operating Kerman’s H&J Chevro-
let for nearly 45 years.
But a stroke this past October threatened to bring
John’s life to a standstill. While watering plants at home
one morning, his right leg suddenly went numb and
he fell to the ground.
“I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get up,”
John says. “I could move my right arm, but my
right leg wouldn’t move at all.”
John’s symptoms were classic warning signs
of stroke. Sometimes called a brain attack, a
stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts or is
blocked by a clot, interfering with blood flow to
the brain.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
These stroke warning signs often appear fast
and sudden:
Numbness or weakness in the face, arm or
leg – often on one side of the body.
Confusion or trouble speaking or under-
standing speech.
Trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
Trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
or coordination.
Severe headache for no known reason.
