Loads of Luvs and piles of Pam-
pers were donated to the Saint
Agnes Women’s Club during its
14th Diaper Drive in May. Each
year, the Women’s Club – a
diverse group of philanthropic
women – collects thousands of
dollars and diapers to donate to
Saint Agnes Holy Cross Center
for Women in downtown Fresno.
“We are so very thankful for the
community’s generous response
each year,” says Sister Mary Clen-
non, CSC, director, Saint Agnes
Holy Cross Center for Women.
“With the growing number of
low-income families coming to the
center, our diaper demand contin-
ues to rise.”
Each month the center
provides diapers to more than
200 families, along with health
and child care education in Eng-
lish and Spanish.
Diapers are just one of the
many ways Holy Cross Center
for Women has served the com-
munity for the past 27 years. The
center is a refuge for homeless
and underserved women and
their children. Operated by Saint
Agnes Medical Center and the
Sisters of the Holy Cross, the
center provides daytime shelter,
counseling and referral services,
education and skills training,
clothing, laundry and shower
facilities, and social activities.
The center serves about 130
women and 20 children each day.
It provides 500-plus articles of
clothing, 900 showers, and
420 loads of laundry each month.
The center helps predominantly
young, impoverished mothers
who face challenges such as un-
employment, poverty, addiction,
fear, racism, low self-esteem and
homelessness. Services are free
to all women.

Letter from
the president
We’ve all heard about the importance
of making our health a top priority.
You know about scheduling a routine
physical, getting regular preventive
exams – such as a mammogram or
prostate screening – and even taking
a personal day every now and then to
unwind. But I’ll be the first to admit,
putting this principle into practice
isn’t so easy.
In the midst of work, daily distrac-
tions, and even denial, our own health
is often the first to take a back seat.
But as you’ll read in this edition of
HealthLink, tuning in to your own
health needs can be a lifesaver.
You’ll discover how regular breast
screenings and our new, comprehen-
sive Breast Program are helping ease
some of the anxieties that can come
with a breast cancer diagnosis
(page 4). Learn about mommy make-
overs and ways women can erase
some of the effects of age and child-
birth that diet and exercise alone
cannot change (page 6). And in our
cover story, read why one man’s quick
action made all the difference in
surviving a stroke.
Whatever your health needs, we at
Saint Agnes Medical Center are com-
mitted to being here for you and your
loved ones for generations to come.
That’s a message we want Valley resi-
dents to hear loud and clear.
In good health,
